Check out pictures of the week: Here!

Cycling week continues to be a resounding success, with eight riders turning up for a group ride, smiles all around despite temperatures in the 40's and rain!  We had team members accompanying three new cyclists who took full advantage of our rent-a-bike-for-the-afternoon program and enjoyed their first ride with the team.

The week continues with rides every afternoon at 4pm, meeting in front of Reid campus center for an hour easy ride, everyone is welcome!  Check out our table there at lunch if you want to sign up to borrow a bike for the ride.  Other events include HOTbike, a bicycle fashion show put on by Whitman cycling alum Rebecca Jensen this Thursday at 8pm.  Hot bikes, hot bods, hot music, hot raffle prizes... check it out at the HOTbike event website.

We'll also be taking some team photos this Friday at 3:30- wear your new kits and let's get a HUGE turnout!  This is our big sponsorship pic of the year so come on out.  We'll follow it with the big team ride at 4pm in preparation for our mock races on Saturday.

The mock races are the culmination of cycling week, starting with a mock road race Saturday morning at 9am, giving the vets a chance to get back into racing mode while giving our new riders the experience of a race before the collegiate season starts.  We'll have time to grab lunch before the afternoon time trial, run through the Bikery Racing team.  It's a 9 mile loop, about the same length as a collegiate Team Time Trial, and we'll use it to set teams for the first collegiate race.  Not to be missed!  Riders from L'Ecole, Allegro, and the community will be joining us and we'll split into two groups, for beginners as well as experienced cyclists.  It looks like good weather is on for both Friday and Saturday so come on out!

Nov.15 - EOU Saddle Height Cycling Study

Check out pictures of the week: Here!

The team recently received an amazing offer from Professor Brian Sather at Eastern Oregon University's Physical Activity and Health (PHYSH) division.  Brian Sather and Darren Dutto with the assistance of student-athlete Zac Heath, are hoping to capture the effects of saddle orientation on power output at inclines of zero and ten degrees respectively.  Looking to expand their sample size of Cat.3 & Cat.4 men, the guys contacted the Whitman team.

This morning Aaron Rose (Cat.4 road) and Ben Chaddock (Cat.2 road) ventured down to La Grande, Oregon for an orientation/control session.  After checking body fat, height, weight, leg circumference and specific on-bike bio-mechanical measurements, the guys got comfortable on a newly designed type of rollers.  Allowing the entire apparatus to move freely under the rider (mounted on a track system), the new design really simulates road riding. After a 30 minute warmup the guys jumped onto a regular trainer for their VO2 max test, donning a mask and a super sweet powertap rear wheel.  Both Aaron and Ben put in a great test, pushing it to the limit with both reaching a 1.3 RER (where the body is burning 100% carbohydrate).  Aaron finished up with an impressive 68 VO2 max at 350 watts, with Ben a little stronger with 72 at 415 watts.

Both Colin Gibson (Cat.3 road) and Nick Littman (Cat.4 road) are looking forward to joining the study in December after their collegiate swimming and cross-country running seasons finish up respectively.

The second half of the study will evaluate power output changes due to seat orientation.  Using electromyographic electrodes, the professors will monitor electrical activity in each rider`s muscles and use video software to review these bio-mechanical movements.  See their site for a more indepth look! (CyclingAnalysis.com) Having some good practice today on this new roller design, both Aaron and Ben are looking forward to the second session.

See link for the end of Ben`s VO2 Test.

Whitties Meet Edison - Make Giant Lightbulb!!

Burr its cold!  How did this happen! Global warming must be just a bunch of crap!

The past few weeks have seen the leaves change pretty quickly and the corn maze is getting ready for visitors. The winds are picking up and the Stanger Farm is preparing for an epic race in two weeks time...it must be cyclocross season!

The team also scored a great opportunity this weekend after chatting with community bike safety coordinators Mary-Ann Duffy, Patty & Clint Froke, Michelle McKee in landing a guest role at Kay Barga's Edison Elementary bike safety rodeo.  The team helped fix bikes, run various drills (like the figure of eight, stop sign drill) and helped jazz the kids by sporting our sick Voler kits.

All riders who completed the ten stations were entered into a draw for one of two brand new BMX Giant bikes supplied by our local sponsor shop, Allegro Cyclery. Michael Williams and Chloe Copler scored these big prizes!! Great effort Mike and Chloe! Dan Butler came across the with the slowest time in the slow race (a supreme test of bike handling and blizzard-strength wind-countering balance) to claim his first Edison Elementary Bike Rodeo White Jersey (he is under 25 according to the UCI!) supplied by the Whitman Cycling Team.  Wow, those Blackwolf eyes still look so sick! Free helmets were also passed out and every fourth registered rider snagged a complementary water bottle, supplied by either Allegro Cyclery, Whitman Cycling or the Bicycle Barn. These kids look mad pro now!

The event was a great success and despite a chilly start, everyone was smiling and having a great time once they jumped on their bikes.  There was even a little ripper pulling off full-on cyclocross remounts just like the pros! Look out Trebon!

The Whitman team would like to extend our great thanks to Kay Barga and all the staff at Edison Elementary for welcoming us into this event.  It was our pleasure to help out but it was definitely their hard work behind the scenes that made this event awesome!

In other team news the cyclocross squad is starting to get sorted out.  Justin Bannerman is our new team chaparone this season and we are looking forward to working with him as he holds many years of riding / racing experience under his "short in length" belt (he is mad fit, killing it in the top five at washington state master's 1/2 races!).  Andy Erickson, Colin Gibson, Jeff Hophenbek and possibly Roxy Peirson will join John Spring and myself to make up the core group this year.

The next big race on the calendar is the Walla Walla stop on the Inland Cyclocross series during the weekend of October 25th and 26th.  The weekend's events will begin with an early afternoon start at Charles Stanger's farm property just north of Walla Walla.  The race will feature a new river crossing, the newly improved overpass bridge, the classic run through the barn and a high speed barrier dismount, yehaw!

Saturday will finish up with Charles' annual Halloween costume barn party so race in your digs and then dance the night away.  But don't forget to make it out for Sunday's race at Rooks Park near Walla Walla Community College.  A shorter lap, utilizing natural banking, volleyball pits and a sweet section of tarmac will add a nice variety to the weekend's races.

There will be fan vans going out both days so email us and we can get ya out there.

Happy riding all,

Ben Chaddock
